What I Do
It’s a little complicated to describe what I do…
-I have been fascinated by the religious impulse since I was a child, and have spent my adult life and professional career studying and living religion, though my interests are not constrained by the study of religion...
-I have a keen interest in American history and culture, particularly the intersection between religion and culture.
-I have taught courses in ethics, literature, and humanities with teenagers, young adults, and adults.
-I have years of classroom experience, which includes teaching writing, creating curriculum, and mentoring students through the thinking and learning journey…and I also have years of experience outside the classroom as well!
-As a person of two cultures, I also am deeply curious about what it means to belong as well as not belong, and to walk the liminal spaces between communities.
-I am well-versed in issues of diversity, especially religious diversity. I have led visits to faith communities, taught about nearly every religion of the world, and I am still learning; it’s the reason I’m pursuing doctoral work in the study of religion with interests in the history of religions, comparative religions, and how people experience the religious impulse. I want be part of ways to deepen the ways that people understand religions in the public sphere.
-Having been on the leadership side of churches as well as non-profits, I am comfortable with budgets, spreadsheets, fundraising, programs, and the “little things” that go into making an organization run.
As I journey through the Ph.D., I am focusing my work on teaching opportunities, college essay assistance (and other writing/coaching opportunities), speaking and event facilitation, and guest preaching/teaching. Yes, it’s an eclectic combination, but take a look at my resume here as well as my endorsements and you’ll see I can do all of the above!
